Technical Abstract: Many agronomically important plants have evolved in tropical and semitropical regions rendering them sensitive to exposure to low temperature. This is especially true when the low temperature is combined with high light. In the chilling sensitive tomato, there is a decrease in de novo synthesis of D1, a chloroplast encoded protein of photo system II that is damaged during the stress exposure. This decrease is due to events occurring during translations, as there is no change in the steady state level of the D1 mRNA nor in the mRNA association with polysomes. There is an observed increase in the associate with large polysomes, supporting potentially at locations where the nascent peptide association with D2, another protein of the PSII complex.
