Glossary of Selected Glacier and Related Terminology

The following collection of glacier terminology is often encountered during discussions of the glaciers on the Cascade Range volcanoes. The majority of this glossary came from A Visitor's Guide to Mount Rainier Glaciers, written by USGS Glaciologist Carolyn Driedger (published in 1986 by the Pacific Northwest National Parks and Forests Association). Additional sources are listed at the end. For a more complete listing of glacier terminology than is presented here please refer to USGS Open-File Report 2004-1216 by Bruce F. Molnia, "Glossary of Glacier Terminology: A glossary providing the vocabulary necessary to understand the modern glacier environment".
