The Transportation Planning Excellence Awards Program
is a biennial awards program that was developed by the FHWA
and the FTA to recognize outstanding initiatives across the
country to develop, plan, and implement innovative transportation
planning practices. The American Planning Association is
co-sponsoring these awards. The deadline for nominations is
February 27, 2004.

The Returning City examines how decisions about
public transportation, community development, and
historic preservation have contributed to shared successes
in these areas. Through case studies it highlights where
historic preservation values have influenced community
transportation planning and how these values are influencing
economic development decisions intended to support and promote
