Description:

Abstract:
This dataset contains the locations of analysis sites which represent groups of field sites that can be considered to be logically co-located for analysis purposes.
Purpose:
This dataset was created in order to be able to query and analyze field sites which can be considered to be logically co-located for analysis purposes.
Supplemental_Information:
The ANALYSIS_SITE coverage provides a way to query and analyze field sites that are logically related by storing a representative point location for groups of field sites that can be logically co-located for such purposes. The AMLI_Analysis_ID allows points in the ANALYSIS_SITE coverage to be related to the field sites in the FIELD_SITES coverage, which in turn can be related to additional files containing information about the field sites.

There are 10 such files in the database created for USGS Professional Paper P1652 which provide additional information about the field sites, the data collected at these field sites, the results from this data collection process, and descriptive information about the data and results. These files are: LocationMaster, Project, Sample, Result, Parameter, QualitativeResult, AnalyticMethod, SampleMedia, LabName, and FieldSiteMineSiteAssocs. These files are described in a metadata file called relational_db.html.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The primary method used to check the accuracy of the attributes was to check the values of the attributes of a few randomly selected analysis sites versus the polygon coverages which were used to provide the attribute values via GIS spatial overlay operations.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Field site locations used for analysis sites, or analysis sites independently located, were verified using Digital Orthophoto Quad (DOQ) images plotted at a scale of approximately 1:12000. As a result, the horizontal accuracy of the analysis site point features is approximately 20 feet.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The initial sources of information for this dataset were files provided by project scientists which contained latitude/longitude locations for the sample sites, and a unique SiteNumber. The locations were converted to an ArcInfo point coverage, FIELD_SITES, in UTM coordinates. The sample site points were plotted on Digital Orthophoto Quad (DOQ) imagery. These plots were sent to the scientists who had collected the samples in order to indicate any necessary changes to their locations. The locations of the point features in the coverage were then corrected based on the annotated plots. Next, plots showing all of the correctly located field sites were sent to the project scientists, who determined which field sites should be logically grouped as an analysis site, and marked the locations of any analysis sites that were not co-located with an existing field site. Since some analysis site locations were slightly different than any of the field sites grouped for that analysis site, a separate coverage called ANALYSIS_SITE was created. Analysis sites that were co-located with one of the field sites were copied from the FIELD_SITES coverage, while those that were not were heads-up digitized based on the annotated plots. Attributes from a variety of sources were then added to the ANALYSIS_SITE.PAT file (see_Entity_and_Attribute_Overview section).

Entity_and_Attribute_Information:
Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
This dataset contains 16 point attributes in the ANALYSIS_SITE.PAT file:

AMLI_Analysis_ID - unique, identifying number for each
analysis_site; allows analysis sites to be related to the field
sites that are grouped as that analysis site; a value of 5000 or
greater indicates an analysis site which has multiple field sites
grouped together; a value of less than 5000 indicates an analysis
site which consists of a single field site
No_Fsites - number of field sites comprising the analysis site
Sitenumber1 - field SiteNumber of first field site included in
   analysis site
Sitenumber2 - field SiteNumber of second field site included in
analysis site, if there are two or more
Sitenumber3 - field SiteNumber of third field site included in
analysis site, if there are three or more
Sitenumber4 - field SiteNumber of fourth field site included in
analysis site, if there are four
Longitude - longitude of analysis site location
Latitude - latitude of analysis site location
Elevation - elevation of analysis site in feet
Township - township number and direction of analysis site
Range - range number and direction of analysis site
Section - section number of analysis site
Lithology - rock type at analysis site
Strat_Unit - geologic unit at analysis site
Geol_Age - geologic age of rock at analysis site
Subbasin - subbasin within the Boulder River watershed within which
the analysis site is located; subbasins defined by project
scientists based on usefullness for interpreting project data
Longitude and latitude values were calculated using the ArcInfo PROJECT command. Elevation was determined using the ArcInfo LATTICESPOT command and the ELEVATION grid (Database for the Abandoned Mine Lands Initiative, Boulder Watershed Study Area: Elevation (elevation.html)). Township, Range, and Section were added by doing a spatial overlay using the IDENTITY command with the PLSS coverage (Database for the Abandoned Mine Lands Initiative, Boulder Watershed Study Area: Public Land Survey System (plss.html)) as the identity coverage. Lithology, Strat_Unit, and Geol_Age were added using the IDENTITY command with the Boulder River watershed study GEOLOGY coverage as the identity coverage. Subbasin was added using the IDENTITY command with the SUBBASINS coverage (Database for the Abandoned Mine Lands Initiative, Boulder Watershed Study Area: Subbasins (subbasins.html)) as the identity coverage.
