Description:

Abstract:
This dataset contains the mine sites and mine-related features deemed most significant in the Abandoned Mine Lands Initiative Boulder watershed study area.

Purpose:
One of the most important facets of characterizing watersheds affected by abandoned mine lands is knowing the locations and other basic information about the historical mines and other mining-related sites. Every site in the watershed represents a potential source of trace elements that could affect water quality and ecosystem health through direct drainage, seepage, erosion, or runoff.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The primary method used to check attribute accuracy was to provide a spreadsheet of attributes and values to USGS personnel in Montana for verification through a rigorous manual review.
Logical_Consistency_Report: N/A
Completeness_Report:
The objective of this inventory centers on the creation of a collection of mine-related sites that are accurately positioned and attributed in order to provide information to be used in answering important questions about mine site and stream remediation within the project study area (see Database for the Abandoned Mine Lands Initiative, Boulder Watershed Study Area: Study Area Boundary (study_area_bd.html)). However, the watershed study area contains numerous prospects and smaller mine-related locations not inventoried for this study. While the potential exists for any one of these sites to adversely contribute to the ecosystem's health, the data sources and field investigations suggest that this inventory is comprehensive in terms of identifying the significant abandoned mines and mine-related sites within the study area.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Accuracy of these digital data in part is based upon the use of source graphics which are compiled to meet National Map Accuracy Standards (NMAS). (Refer to USGS Fact Sheet FS-171-99 or visit <http://mac.usgs.gov/mac/isb/pubs/factsheets/fs17199.html> for more information.) NMAS horizontal accuracy requires that at least 90 percent of points tested are within 0.02 inches of the true position. The digital data are estimated to contain a horizontal positional error of less than or equal to 0.003 inches standard error in the two component directions relative to the source graphic. These digital data undergoing standard update revision meet NMAS for horizontal position. Horizontal positional accuracy for the digital data is tested by visual comparison to the image source.

This source contributed data on mines and prospects that were obtained mainly from the Mineral Resources Data System (MRDS), a USGS computer file that includes records on mineral occurrences throughout the United States. Additional data were obtained from unpublished records of the U.S. Forest Service, field investigations conducted during this study, and published reports more recent than those cited in MRDS. The location of 1128 mines and prospects in the Butte quadrangle are shown on the map and in figures 3-14. This map proved useful for location and name verification and other attribute information.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The process used to determine the representative location for a mine-related site included the following steps. The State of Montana, United States Forest Service (USFS), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) databases provided an initial site and location list. These data were combined into one digital layer and each site location was resolved to one representative point based on 1993 and 1998 digital orthophoto quadrangles (DOQs). Some mine-related sites contained multiple adits, shafts, and prospects, yet only one point location was captured to "best" represent the inventory site. Also, in some cases, the site location had to be determined strictly from a written description because not all of the pre-existing data were geo-referenced. Using DOQ image plots containing the resolved mine locations, USFS and USGS personnel in Montana verified and revised the mine-related sites based on limited site visits, survey plats, and local knowledge of the area.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
This dataset contains ten point attributes in the MINE_SITES.PAT file. They are AMLI_MINE_ID, NAME, LOCATION_STAT, SHAFTS, ADITS, NUM_FLOW_ADITS, MILL_EXIST, DUMP_QUANTITY, TAIL_QUANTITY, and PAST_PRODUCT.

AMLI_MINE_ID is a unique identifier for each mine site and mine-related site located for the USGS Abandoned Mine Lands Initiative (U.S. Geological Survey, 2002, Integrated investigations of environmental effects of historical mining in the Basin and Boulder mining districts, Boulder River watershed, Jefferson County, Montana: USGS Professional Paper P1652). LOCATION_STAT describes the relative certainty of the location of a site, SHAFTS and ADITS lists the number of each of these features at a site, NUM_FLOW_ADITS records the number of flowing adits at a site, and MILL_EXIST tells the historical or current presence of a mill at a site. DUMP_QUANTITY and TAIL_QUANTITY record the amount of waste rock and mill tailings at a site, and PAST_PRODUCT lists a site's output in relative terms. Only AMLI_MINE_ID and NAME have values for all these attributes.

There is also a table, MINE_SITES.ADITFLOW, which contains information about flowing adits that exist at some of the mine-related sites. This table is logically linked to the MINE_SITES.PAT file by the AMLI_MINE_ID. Some mine sites have one or multiple flowing adits, while many have none. There is one record in the MINE_SITES.ADITFLOW table for each flowing adit that was found during the research for the creation of this dataset. Where known, the flow rate and pH of a flowing adit is contained in the items FLOW_RATE and PH.
