Project Period: November 1, 2003 through October 31, 2008
Project Period Covered by this Report: November 1, 2005 through October 31,2006
Project Amount: $4,435,198
RFA: Centers for Children's Environmental Health and Disease Prevention Research (2003)
Research Category: Children's Health , Health Effects
Description:
Objective:The Columbia Center for Children’s Environmental Health (CCCEH) has achieved its specific aims through Year 8, conducting molecular epidemiologic research examining early life exposures to common urban pollutants’ contribution to children’s risk of asthma, developmental delay, & and cancer risk. The Center’s prospective cohort studies, laboratory-based experimental research, and interventions are advancing scientific understanding of disease pathogenesis, the health effects of exposures to air pollutants, pesticides, and environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), and their interactions with genetic polymorphisms, nutritional deficiencies, and social factors. The Mothers & Newborns Children Study cohort in New York City (NYC) is the Center’s largest study, having enrolled 725 families to date (target enrollment of 731 mother-child pairs is on schedule) from largely low-income areas of color in Washington Heights, Harlem, and the South Bronx.
