Description:
Objective:This community-based participatory research (CBPR) project is studying childhood obesity in relation to structural features and endocrine disruptor (ED) exposures in the urban built environment of East Harlem. The specific objective of this project is to assess accessibility to physical activity resources and to healthy foods.
Progress Summary:This project continues apace, with a manuscript submitted and one in preparation that describe features of the built environment and children in East Harlem. Our children are at great risk for overweight and obesity. A recently completed 6-month study to evaluate biomarker protocols in 34 6–8 year-old children of phthalates, phenols, and phytoestrogens shows high levels of urinary metabolites in the phthalate, phytoestrogen, and phenol families of EDs. Levels were quite stable over time, indicating that spot urines are useful to examine general exposures. We now plan to examine relationships of urine levels with specific products to identify sources of EDs. Phase 2 of the 3-year longitudinal study has begun to evaluate risk prospectively for obesity in relation to built environment factors and ED exposures.
Future Activities:As the longitudinal study continues to collect data on exposures and obesity outcomes, we are planning to publish the study on temporal variability and reliability of the EDs that was completed last year, and we will continue to examine ED exposure levels and their relationship to diet, physical activity level, and weight, and to compare availability, proximity, and density of resources (GIS data) with individual level factors (neighborhood questionnaire) such as access, knowledge, utilization, dietary quality, and physical activity level. A modification to the protocol is being submitted for Institutional Review Board (IRB) review to add the collection of saliva/cheek cells from all children (boys) in the study in order to measure common genetic polymorphisms that may influence the body’s ability to metabolize chemical substances including phthalates and bisphenol A.
