After reading the new draft guidelines which the committee proposes, one thought continues to bring itself to the forefront. They sound great if the country can afford to spend half its money on less than 2% of the public and the majority of the public doesn't mind having fewer improvement projects due to the much higher costs involved. I'm sorry, I've never made comments on a public document before but I believe these guidelines will make many enhancement projects unrealistically expensive and will bring about a flood of new litigation. If the original law was a 36" sidewalk how can a committee justify wanting a 60" sidewalk. These guidelines will unfairly hurt rural areas that have few or no disabled people and yet will be forced to spend 100% or more per project to accommodate people that are not there to use the facility. The laws have gone too far and the costs associated are just unreasonable, especially in time of economic downturns when it is a struggle just to keep funding to "patch potholes". Please reconsider the committee position on implementing new, tougher standards to promote an agenda that is out of touch with the mainstream public.
