DOT ANNOUNCES
NATIONAL PIPELINE MAPPING SYSTEM

Research and Special Programs Administrator Kelley S. Coyner today announced a $3 million federal government contract to Michael Baker Jr., Inc., for development of a national repository to collect and store data for the National Pipeline Mapping System.

"Safety is our highest transportation priority," Administrator Coyner said. "This new contract will bring the digital age to pipeline mapping and will improve our ability to protect communities and the environment from potential pipeline failure."

The new system will help the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of Pipeline Safety more accurately assess pipeline safety and environmental protection needs in specific areas of the country.

The repository system is the result of pilot tests conducted by 10 state agencies, 22 pipeline operators and six pipeline mapping vendors. The information will be used to help evaluate the impact and formulate response to pipeline damage resulting from natural disasters and construction accidents.
