Van Beek Named Deputy Administrator of RSPA

U.S. Transportation Secretary Rodney E. Slater today announced that Stephen D. Van Beek, Ph.D., has been appointed deputy administrator for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research and Special Programs Administration (RSPA).

"We are pleased to welcome Steve Van Beek. His experience in education, research and public policy will be valuable to this key position within the agency responsible for conducting and fostering crosscutting research and protecting the public and the environment from the risks inherent in the transportation of hazardous materials," Secretary Slater said.

Before this appointment, Van Beek taught American politics and public policy at San Jose State University (SJSU) between 1990 and 1997. While at SJSU, he was also a research associate with the Norman Y. Mineta International Institute of Surface Transportation Policy Studies. He has also taught at Washington and Lee University and worked for former U.S. Rep. Tony Coelho (Calif.).

Van Beek received his doctorate and master’s degree in government and foreign affairs from the University of Virginia and his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is a member of the national honor society, Phi Kappa Phi.

He is married to Elizabeth Tucker Van Beek, Ph.D., who teaches American history at San Jose State University.
