Preparing For The FuturePosted February 10, 2003 Given that nearly 60 percent of the senior executives in GSA will be eligible to retire over the next five years, agency officials have launched an intensive drive to identify and train a new generation of leaders. That effort, begun last year in the Public Buildings Service and expanded this year to cover GSA’s Central Office and 11 regions, has produced the 58-member Advanced Leadership Development Program Class of 2003. “Each of you endured a long and rigorous application process in order to earn your place in this distinguished group,” Administrator Stephen A. Perry told the leadership class at a kick-off ceremony in January. Developing outstanding leaders, Perry said, “is essential to creating the organizational capability needed for GSA to achieve our agency’s critically important mission of service to our customer agencies and to the American people.” This year’s class emerged from a pool of 243 applicants during a selection process that began last July. While being selected was a high honor, Perry noted that the real work is just beginning. In the coming months, participants will work individually with leadership coaches to maximize strengths and bolster weaknesses, craft individual development plans, and focus on the skills and competencies that are vital to GSA. While the challenge is significant, Perry said, “You’ve already demonstrated, through your previous academic and work achievements, that you are fully capable. Additionally, you have shown the most important predictor of success: Desire.”
