GSA Associates Respond to the Needs of Military PersonnelPosted May 19, 2003 GSA’s Southeast Sunbelt Region initiated the Call-up Assistance and Real Expressions of Support (CARES) program to allow associates to actively express their gratitude to those called for military duty. The program is guided by a dedicated group of volunteers. They ensure that GSA associates performing military duty, and the families they leave behind, receive support from their regional GSA "family.” At a special ceremony on April 24, 2003, Regional Administrator Ed Fielder signed a statement that pledged GSA’s support to associates in the National Guard and Reserves. Eighteen associates in the Southeast Sunbelt Region have been called to active duty in Iraq or are serving in an inactive capacity. Fielder also reminded the audience of Administrator Perry's decision to allow GSA to pay the agency and associate portions of the Federal Employees Health Benefits of associates serving in the war. Meanwhile, in the Heartland Region, GSA associates with the Federal Technology Service collected voluntary contributions. They presented a check for $425 to the 509th Communications Squadron on Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri. The money helped provide personalized “care packages” to deployed squadron members. Then the Heartland Region, partnering with the Defense Finance & Accounting Service, held a “We Support Our Troops” rally and lapel pin sale. The profits from the sale will be divided among the military personnel and family relief organizations of each branch of the Armed Forces. The sale raised approximately $6,000 for the family relief organizations. Responding to a wish list, associates in GSA’s Greater Southwest Region collected items for the troops. They assembled and shipped to Iraq approximately 70 care packages. The shipment was distributed among the military services there. Out West, in GSA’s Rocky Mountain Region, the employee’s association held a drive to collect toiletries, games, magazines, and other items. The donations were assembled and sent to GSA associates who have been deployed and to their family members. Actions that show people care are coming from all around the nation. Citizens who want to assist may participate through FirstGov.
