Computer Lab Training for Women

The Women's Museum: An Institute for the Future is equipped with a state-of-the-art computer laboratory that consists of 25 workstations, access to the Internet, teaching aids, and a full-time staff. It is centrally located in an economically disadvantaged Dallas community adjacent to a major bus line.

The Women's Bureau is helping the Women's Museum utilize its existing computer laboratory and volunteer instructors to provide IT training to women in the South Dallas area. Women, recruited from the local area (including churches in the neighboring communities and appropriate social services agencies) participate in a wide variety of training opportunities. Women are enrolled in appropriate skill-level training, which provides instruction in personal computer basics, Internet and e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, databasing, web design, resume writing, and job searching.

On-Line Learning for Single Moms

Have you ever wanted to take courses and increase your work skills so you could earn more money? Have family responsibilities plus your current job duties overwhelmed your schedule so there just aren't enough hours in the day to study, to learn? We think that many American women face this dilemma; they need an opportunity to learn at home -- on their own time and at their own pace. To test this idea, the Women's Bureau in conjunction with DOL's Employment and Training Administration is working with New Jersey Department of Labor (NJDOL) to develop a distance learning project for underemployed single mothers with children under 18 years of age. NJDOL, in partnership with selected local Workforce Investment Boards (or WIB's, as they are commonly called), is implementing this innovative project in several of its counties. It is expected that upon completion of the program, the women who participate will be placed into occupations that require higher skills and, consequently, they will be commanding higher wages.
