Planetary OGC “brainstorming” meeting

Why: As with terrestrial datasets, the number of planetary datasets has exploded over the last decade. Nearly each repository of planetary data has also generated different methods to web-enabled these datasets. The number of datasets and distribution centers is only going to grow. This is not an attempt to standardize everyone to a single tool but rather standardize on a protocol such that web mapping interfaces can use data from each others sites. The protocol that seems to be in the forefront of this initiative is by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). The OGC FAQ states it best “… the need to share and reuse geodata in order to decrease costs, get more or better information, and increase the value of data holdings -- can only be addressed by cooperation among technology users and providers.” Another section from the OGC FAQ is also worth looking at, “Q: What problem is OGC attempting to solve?” http://www.opengis.org/resources/?page=faq#10
Agenda: The agenda will be very casual. We are fortunate to have Dr. John Evans join us from GST, Inc. / NASA Geospatial Interoperability Office in Maryland to help shed some light on the OGC and some of the protocols. Topics to be covered will include the OGC, OGC protocols, map projections, planetary datum support, format support, servers, clients, map projected data vs. raw data support, and other topics that come up.
