UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending June 2, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 309,000, a decrease of 1,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 310,000. The 4-week moving average was 307,250, an increase of 2,750 from the previous week's unrevised average of 304,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending May 26, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 26 was 2,535,000, an increase of 72,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,463,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,498,250, a decrease of 4,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,502,250.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 261,509 in the week ending June 2, a decrease of 12,407 from the previous week. There were 260,263 initial claims in the comparable week in 2006.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during the week ending May 26, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,259,000, an increase of 27,894 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,163,894.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending May 19.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 982 in the week ending May 26, an increase of 98 from the prior week. There were 1,536 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 35 from the preceding week.

There were 10,193 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 19, a decrease of 1,772 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 21,179, a decrease of 627 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 19 were in Alaska (3.1 percent), Puerto Rico (2.8), Michigan (2.7), New Jersey (2.5), Arkansas (2.4), Oregon (2.4), Pennsylvania (2.4), Rhode Island (2.3), California (2.2), Massachusetts (2.2), and Wisconsin (2.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 26 were in Texas (+2,149), Michigan (+1,888), New York (+1,803), Oregon (+1,257), and Indiana (+1,002), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-3,477), Missouri (-2,072), Georgia (-978), Arkansas (-706), and Oklahoma (-517).
