UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent for the week ending Feb. 3, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Feb. 3 was 2,560,000, an increase of 71,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,489,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,518,750, an increase of 18,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,500,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 361,198 in the week ending Feb. 10, an increase of 22,218 from the previous week. There were 310,078 initial claims in the comparable week in 2006. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during the
week ending Feb. 3, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week.
The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 3,087,055, an increase of 105,654 from the preceding week. A year earlier,
the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 3,006,942. Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Jan. 27. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,175 in the week ending Feb. 3, a decrease of 363 from the prior week. There were 1,787 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 149 from the preceding week. There were 17,091 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 27, a decrease of 4,290 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 24,163, a decrease of 1,844 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 27 were in Alaska (4.6 percent), Michigan (4.2), Wisconsin (3.8), Rhode Island (3.6), Pennsylvania (3.5), Massachusetts (3.3), New Jersey (3.3), Puerto Rico (3.2), Idaho (3.1), Illinois (3.1), and Vermont (3.1). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Feb. 3 were in Virginia (+2,286), Michigan (+1,336), Kentucky (+873), New Jersey (+736), and North Carolina (+466), while the largest decreases were in Missouri (-3,250), South Carolina (-2,494), Pennsylvania (-2,154), Texas (-2,023), and Tennessee (-1,932).
