UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Sept. 27, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 399,000, an increase of 13,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 386,000. The 4-week moving average was 403,500, a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week's revised average of 408,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending Sept. 20, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Sept. 20 was 3,673,000, an increase of 62,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,611,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,645,500, an increase of 16,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,629,000.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 300,236 in the week ending Sept. 27, a decrease of 1,058 from the previous week. There were 319,063 initial claims in the comparable week in 2002.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during the week ending Sept. 20, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,023,090, a decrease of 20,755 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,988,181.
 
Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Michigan, North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending Sept. 13.

53 states reported that 814,898 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Sept. 13.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,513 in the week ending Sept. 20, a decrease of 900 from the prior week. There were 1,755 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 86 from the preceding week.

There were 17,952 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 13, a decrease of 197 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 19,675, an increase of 166 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 13 were in Puerto Rico (4.9 percent), Oregon (4.1), Alaska (3.5), Pennsylvania (3.4), California (3.3), Washington (3.2), New Jersey (3.1), Massachusetts (2.9), Connecticut (2.8), and Michigan (2.7).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 20 were in Texas (+1,884), Michigan (+1,755), Kentucky (+468), Alaska (+435), and Iowa (+355), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-6,509), New York (-3,594), Virginia (-3,164), California (-2,284), and Georgia (-1,868).
