UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT
SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Sept. 13, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 399,000, a decrease of 29,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 428,000. The 4-week moving average was 410,750, an increase of 2,000 from the previous week's revised average of 408,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending Sept. 6, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Sept. 6 was 3,683,000, an increase of 39,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,644,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,642,000, an increase of 13,250 from the preceding week's revised
average of 3,628,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 326,186 in the week ending Sept. 13, an increase of 4,198 from the previous week. There were 337,577 initial claims in the comparable week in 2002.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.5 percent during the week ending Sept. 6, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,203,912, an increase of 88,421 from the preceding week. A year earlier,
the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 3,107,849.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Michigan, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending Aug. 30.
53 states reported that 805,795 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Aug. 30.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,281 in the week ending Sept. 6, a decrease of 131 from the prior week. There were 1,709 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 72 from the preceding week.
There were 16,638 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 30, a decrease of 1,230 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,099, a decrease of 508 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 30 were in Puerto Rico (4.2 percent), Oregon (3.8), Alaska (3.6), Pennsylvania (3.6), New Jersey (3.5), Washington (3.4), Massachusetts (3.2), California (3.1), Connecticut (3.1), and Rhode Island (2.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 6 were in Pennsylvania (+3,526), Michigan (+2,992), North Carolina (+2,773), Georgia (+2,471), and Oregon (+1,288), while the largest decreases were in California (-4,916), Kentucky (-2,594), Indiana (-1,024), Delaware (-891),
and Arkansas (-696).
