UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 19, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 376,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 391,000. The 4-week moving average was 404,250, a decrease of  8,750 from the previous week's revised average of 413,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent for the week ending Jan. 12, unchanged  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Jan. 12 was 3,458,000, a decrease of 54,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,512,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,548,000, a decrease of 52,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,600,500.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 582,909 in the week ending Jan.  19, a decrease of  208,683 from the previous week. There were 399,254 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.4 percent during the week ending Jan. 12, a decrease of 0.2 percentage point  from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 4,423,365, a decrease of  244,348 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,833,258.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Jan. 5.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,485 in the week ending Jan. 12, an increase of 717 from the prior week. There were 1,520 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 531 from the preceding week.

There were 19,972 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 5, a decrease of 433 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,240, an increase of 1,017 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 5 were in Alaska (6.5 percent), Puerto Rico (6.3), Oregon (6.0), South Carolina (5.8), Michigan (5.6), Washington (5.6), Idaho (5.3), North Carolina (5.3), Pennsylvania (5.2), Wisconsin (5.0), and Massachusetts (5.0).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 12 were in North Carolina (+38,951), California (+34,040), South Carolina (+33,264), Texas (+9,084), and Michigan (+7,633), while the largest decreases were in New York (-15,929), Wisconsin (-4,458), Iowa (-2,658), Arkansas (-1,774), and Massachusetts (-1,477).
