UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Sept. 29, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 528,000, an increase of  71,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 457,000. The 4-week moving average was 453,500, an increase of  29,500 from the previous week's revised average of 424,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent for the week ending Sept. 22, an increase of  0.1 percentage point  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.6 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Sept. 22 was 3,410,000, an increase of 133,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,277,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,310,750, an increase of 54,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,256,000.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 395,126 in the week ending Sept. 29, an increase of  41,707 from the previous week. There were 226,112 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent during the week ending Sept. 22, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,765,911, an increase of  62,226 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.4 percent and the volume was 1,729,824.  

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Sept. 15.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,260 in the week ending Sept. 22, a decrease of 74 from the prior week. There were 1,332 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 87 from the preceding week.

There were 14,570 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 15, a decrease of 939 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,777, an increase of 691 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 15 were in Puerto Rico (6.6 percent), Oregon (3.5), Washington (3.0), Alaska (2.9), California (2.9), Pennsylvania (2.9), New Jersey (2.8), Arkansas (2.7), Massachusetts (2.7), and Rhode Island (2.5).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 22 were in New York (+10,717), California (+9,337), Michigan (+7,703), Illinois (+3,899), and Texas (+3,725), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-9,931), South Carolina (-2,904), Virginia (-1,939), Alabama (-1,562), and Iowa (-1,016).
