Abstract: " As the Nation's principle

Department also has a major responsibility for American Indians
reservation
communities and for
people who live in island territories." The Government
Information Locator
Service for the
Department of Interior ( DOIGILS) can be viewed as a card
catalog for
information about the
Department. DOIGILS assists its users locate books, video,
tapes, reports,
maps, and other
information to assist the public. DOIGILS doesn't contain the
actual
information. Rather it
contains standard descriptions of information (metadata), where
it is located,
and how the users
can gain access. DOIGILS contains three types of information: 1)

information
dissemination, 2) automated information systems, and 3) Privacy
Act Systems of
Records.
Purpose: The GILS database was developed in

dated
December 7, 1994, which requires each agency to develop and make

information products.
The DOIGILS also
satisfies a similar mandate within the Paperwork Reduction Act of
1995.
Selected publications of
this and other government agencies are available through the
Federal Deposit
Library Program
(FDLP).
Agency Program: "The Department of Interior was
created by the act of March 3,
1849 (43
U.S.C. 1451) which transferred to it the General Land Office, the
Office of
Indian Affairs, the
Pension Office, and the Patent Office. It was recognized by the
Reorganization
Plan No. 3 of
1950, as amended (5 U.S.C. app.). Over the years, other

added and
removed, so that the role has changed from that of general
