Manufacturing in America

On March 5, 2003, Secretary Donald L. Evans launched President George W. Bush’s Manufacturing Agenda during National Manufacturing Week in Chicago. A major feature of the President’s Agenda was the Department of Commerce’s commitment to conduct a comprehensive study of the state of manufacturing in the United States and make policy recommendations. On January 16, 2004, Secretary Evans released Manufacturing in America: A Comprehensive Strategy to Address the Challenges to U.S. Manufacturers. The Manufacturing Report called for enhancing the U.S. Government’s focus on manufacturing competitiveness, and was created after a series of over 20 industry-specific roundtables that were held in various cities throughout the United States during 2003. These roundtables were designed to allow representatives from many different industries to identify the problems faced by U.S. manufacturers.

The Manufacturing Report contains three chapters that include an in-depth analysis of the long-term trends affecting the U.S. manufacturing sector, a report on the key challenges for manufacturers and views expressed at the 2003 roundtables, and a series specific set of recommendations for action by the federal government to better support manufacturers as they face the challenges of the global marketplace. An appendix lists the dates and places of the roundtables, and includes the names of the participants.
