Examples of Statistical Information Gathered

Web Access log

Below are examples of the information collected based on a standard request for a World Wide Web document:

123.12.123.12 -- this is the host name or IP address associated with the requester (you as the visitor). Depending on the requester's method of network connection, the host name or IP address may or may not identify a specific computer. Connections via many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) assign different IP addresses for each session, so the host name identifies only the ISP. If the computer is behind a firewall, the firewall IP address will be identified. The host name or IP address will identify a specific computer if that computer has a fixed IP address.

[22/Jun/1999:10:19:07 -0400] -- this is the date and time of the request

"GET /nara/http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/images/naraicon.gif HTTP/1.0" -- this is the location of the requested file

200 -- this is the status code - 200 is ok, the request was filled

222 -- this is the size of the requested file in bytes.

WAIS server log

Below is an example of the information collected based on a standard request for a document from GPO's WAIS server:

14102 -- this is a session number assigned to the request

Jun 22 10:26:59 1999 -- this is the date and time of the request

100 -- this is the status of the request.

running WAIS Server 2.1.6 -- this identifies the GPO WAIS Server

accepted connection from: website.access.gpo.gov [123.123.23.23], 2.1.6 -- This confirms the connection was accepted and identifies the specific server you are connecting to.

init message: user <none> password <none> client WAISForwarder-1-(2.1.6)-100.000.00.00: -- this identifies by ip address or host name of the requestor (see ip address explanation above)

search database: "106_house_hearings" seed words: "COUNTERPROLIFERATION" -- this identifies what database and search terms the requestor is entering

checking access for forwarder 123.123.23.23 to database /wais/indexes/106_house_hearings/index.acc -- this is checking access to the requested information on GPO's server

checking access for client 100.000.00.00 to database /wais/indexes/106_house_hearings/index.acc -- This is checking access to send requested information to the requestor

found 3 hits -- 3 hits were returned to the requestor

closing connection; -- the requestor is leaving

done handling client -- the session is over

Requests for other types of documents use similar information. No other user-identifying information is collected.
