Aerial view of Kupaianaha lava pond, Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii
Photograph by C. Heliker on November 24, 1986
The Kupaianaha lava pond overflows in this aerial view, adding to the bulk of the shield. By the end of 1986, a lava tube formed an outlet to the pond. From then on, the pond rarely overflowed, and the shield did not grow higher.
