Table 6.12 – Sinks Current Guidelines: 4.1.1 Application. (1) General. All areas of newly designed or newly constructed buildings and facilities and altered portions of existing buildings and facilities shall comply with section 4, unless otherwise provided in this section or as modified in a special application section. 4.24.1 General. Sinks required to be accessible by 4.1 shall comply with 4.24. 4.24.3 Knee Clearance. Knee clearance that is at least 27 in (685 mm) high, 30 in (760 mm) wide, and 19 in (485 mm) deep shall be provided underneath sinks. 4.24.5 Clear Floor Space. A clear floor space at least 30 in by 48 in (760 mm by 1220 mm) complying with 4.2.4 shall be provided in front of a sink to allow forward approach. The clear floor space shall be on an accessible route and shall extend a maximum of 19 in (485 mm) underneath the sink (see Fig. 32). 9.2.2 Minimum Requirements. An accessible unit, sleeping room or suite shall be on an accessible route complying with 4.3 and have the following accessible elements and spaces. . . . (7) Kitchens, Kitchenettes, or Wet Bars. When provided as an accessory to a sleeping room or suite, kitchens, kitchenettes, wet bars, or similar amenities shall be accessible. Clear floor space for a front or parallel approach to cabinets, counters, sinks, and appliances shall be provided to comply with 4.2.4. . . . Final Revised Guidelines: 212.3 Sinks. Where sinks are provided, at least 5 percent, but no fewer than one, of each type provided in each accessible room or space shall comply with 606. Exception: Mop or service sinks shall not be required to comply with 212.3. 606.2 Clear Floor Space. A clear floor space complying with 305, positioned for a forward approach, and knee and toe clearance complying with 306 shall be provided. Exceptions: 1. A parallel approach complying with 305 shall be permitted to a kitchen sink in a space where a cook top or conventional range is not provided and to wet bars. . . . Model Codes & Standards IBC 2000: Section 1108.3 has an equivalent requirement for sinks. IBC 2003: Section 1109.3 has an equivalent requirement for sinks. ICC/ANSI A117.1-1998: Section 606.2 has an equivalent requirement for clear floor space at sinks and an equivalent exception for sinks without a cook top or conventional range.
