Mine Safety and Health Administration Is Hiring in Your Neighborhood!

MSHA to Conduct On-Site Applicant Screening Sessions in NY and PA
and National Mining Association

ARLINGTON, Va.—The U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) today announced a new program to recruit replacements for its force of federal mine inspectors. The agency will use on-site applicant screening sessions, the first three of which are slated for Albany, N.Y.; Wyomissing, Pa.; and Monroeville, Pa., on Oct. 5, 7 and 9, respectively.

Individuals interested in entry-level mine inspector positions with the agency will be asked to appear at the designated location to be tested and interviewed. Successful applicants will be enrolled into the Federal Career Intern Program.

These on-site applicant screening sessions will be conducted nationwide during the next six months. MSHA is looking for dedicated professionals who are committed to a career in mine safety and health. The duty locations for the positions being filled are near each screening location. MSHA inspectors not only enforce mine safety and health regulations at various mining operations, but they will also be expected to explain and hand out training materials for targeted violations, evaluate the effectiveness of safety programs at mining sites and conduct root-cause analysis to address underlying causes of mining industry accidents.

Interested applicants for the mine inspector positions must bring to the screening a completed job application or resume for the mine inspector position for which they wish to apply and a valid photo identification . MSHA's Web site at www.msha.gov lists specific inspector positions. Spaces for applicants are limited at each location and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants must be available at the designated time to take a math and writing test. They will be interviewed after passing the tests.

Applicants will be notified of test results, and selected candidates will participate in a two-year formal training program. Applicants must be physically able to efficiently perform arduous duties. Selected applicants at the GS-9 level will receive a starting salary of approximately $40,000 annually. Additional locality pay may apply.

During October, the applicant screenings for the mine inspector positions will be held in the following locations, and applicants must arrive no later than 8 a.m. at each location:

Oct. 5, 2004 – Test Site: Albany, N.Y. – Albany Airport Inn, Best Western, 205 Wolf Rd.
For mine inspector positions near Albany, Geneva and Manchester, N.Y.

Oct. 7, 2004 – Test Site: Wyomissing, Pa. – Sheraton Hotel, 1741 Paper Mill Rd.
For mine inspector positions near Pottsville, Shamokin, Wilkes-Barre and Wyomissing, Pa.

Oct. 9, 2004 – Test Site: Monroeville, Pa. – Radisson Hotel, 101 Mall Blvd.
For mine inspector positions near Geneva, N.Y., and Warrendale, Clearfield, Ruff Creek, New Stanton, Johnstown, Kittanning and Indiana, Pa.
