MSHA Seeking Mine Inspectors in Kentucky and Tennessee

ARLINGTON, VA — The U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is continuing its efforts to hire new mine inspectors by conducting on-site applicant screenings in Barbourville, Ky., April 28 and 29. Registration for all candidates begins at 7 a.m. at Union College, 310 College St.

“We’re looking for qualified people who can help us continue to make safety the number one priority for the mining industry,” said David G. Dye, acting administrator for mine safety and health. “This agency needs individuals who want to dedicate themselves to our mission and help us eliminate hazards that threaten working miners.”

MSHA is the federal agency charged with inspecting mining operations nationwide for adherence to regulations designed to protect the safety and health of working miners. Individuals interested in entry-level mine inspector positions should pre-register for the on-site screenings by applying on-line at www.doors.dol.gov prior to April 5 through announcement number MSHA-06-132-KY. Successful registration prior to that date will guarantee a seat for the applicant during the test dates.

Those who are unable to pre-register for the screenings prior to the closing of the vacancy announcement may be tested and screened as a “walk-in” candidate, subject to space availability. All persons attending the applicant screening should bring a completed resume and photo identification. Check the MSHA Web site at www.msha.gov to confirm the status of the screenings before traveling to the site.

Applicants will be notified of test results, and selected candidates will participate in a two-year formal training program. Applicants must be able to efficiently perform arduous duties. Selected applicants at the GS-9 level will receive a starting salary of about $42,000 annually.
