Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao to Produce Documentary of Ground Zero Workers

WASHINGTON, D.C. – “To honor and to commemorate” is how Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao described the oral history the Labor Department is producing about the massive recovery and clean-up effort at Ground Zero. The video program will document and commemorate the unstinting efforts and dedication of the workers at the site.

Chao went on to say, “The accomplishment of the recovery workers was historic. We want to thank them for their dedication and effort but we also want to make sure we record their achievement for posterity. That achievement was not only a feat of work or technology; it was also an act of patriotism. In addition to the workers at Ground Zero, we want to recognize the support provided by the unions, contractors and federal, state and city officials. The cooperation and determination of all those involved are examples of the best in our country and its people.”

The oral history will feature interviews with rescue and construction workers who were on site at Ground Zero as well as others involved in the recovery and clean-up work. The video program will provide a record from which to learn and a testament to the accomplishment of the employees who worked at Ground Zero.

The department looks to involve a leading university in the production of this oral history.
