UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending June 23, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 313,000, a decrease of 13,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 326,000. The 4-week moving average was 316,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's revised average of 315,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending June 16, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 16 was 2,490,000, a decrease of 27,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,517,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,505,250, an increase of 6,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,498,500.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 289,020 in the week ending June 23, a decrease of 1,863 from the previous week. There were 287,503 initial claims in the comparable week in 2006.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during the week ending June 16, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,283,315, a decrease of 14,745 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,219,876.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending June 9.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,228 in the week ending June 16, an increase of 18 from the prior week. There were 1,623 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 115 from the preceding week.

There were 11,879 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 9, an increase of 1,379 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 20,866, a decrease of 300 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 9 were in Puerto Rico (3.4 percent), Alaska (3.2), Pennsylvania (2.7), Michigan (2.6), Arkansas (2.5), New Jersey (2.5), California (2.3), Oregon (2.3), Rhode Island (2.3), and Massachusetts (2.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 16 were in Pennsylvania (+4,217), Wisconsin (+2,027), New Jersey (+1,023), Michigan (+871), and Maryland (+652), while the largest decreases were in Illinois (-2,529), Georgia (-2,256), New York (-1,800), Missouri (-1,671), and Texas (-1,452).
