News Release OPA News Release: [04/23/2002] U.S. Department of Labor Provides Over $1.2 Million To SER-Jobs For Progress, Inc. Community Based Organization Receives Grant To Help Minority CommunitiesWASHINGTON The U.S. Department of Labors Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training, Emily Stover DeRocco, presented SER-Jobs For Progress, Inc. a grant for more than $1.2 million to strengthen the organizations workforce investment activities. The grant was presented during the 37th Annual SER Conference and Job Fair in Albuquerque, NM. This grant provides SER with the funds to help expand the reach of the publicly-funded workforce system to better serve members of the Hispanic community, said DeRocco. The funds will assist SER in supporting the participation of minority communities in workforce investment activities. It will also allow SER to strengthen working relationships with other major community-based organizations. SER will provide a host of critical services with the funding including providing assessments of customers workforce needs and referrals to local employment and training services through One-Stop Career Centers, and fostering greater opportunities by building connections to other service delivery organizations. The SER grant is part of President Bushs effort to provide assistance to workers needing employment and access to skills training. Building on the successful passage of the Economic Security package that provided extended unemployment compensation to workers and $8 billion in assistance to states for reemployment services, the Administration has also requested $750 million in dislocated worker assistance as part of the Supplemental Appropriations package sent to Congress.
