UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending June 2, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 432,000, an increase of  13,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 419,000. The 4-week moving average was 413,500, an increase of 11,000 from the previous week's unrevised average of 402,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending May  26, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.2 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 26 was 2,993,000, an increase of 209,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,784,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,804,500, an increase of 72,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,732,000.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 332,846 in the week ending June 2, a decrease of 14,676 from the previous week. There were 242,970 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending May 26, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,633,724, an increase of 75,278 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.4 percent and the volume was 1,776,119.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending May 19.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,141 in the week ending May 26, an increase of 186 from the prior week. There were 972 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 12 from the preceding week.

There were 14,538 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 19, a decrease of 789 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,580, a decrease of 386 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 19 were in Puerto Rico (5.7 percent), Alaska (4.4), Oregon (3.5), Washington (3.3), Arkansas (2.8), California (2.8), Pennsylvania (2.6), Rhode Island (2.6), Idaho (2.4), New Jersey (2.4), and Wisconsin (2.4).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 26 were in Wisconsin (+3,352), Michigan (+2,795), Puerto Rico (+2,696), North Carolina (+1,698), and Illinois (+ 1,226), while the largest decreases were in California (-2,153), Texas (-1,447), South Carolina (-1,445), Oklahoma (-1,340), and Tennessee (-1,023).
