How PHMSA Can Help

PHMSA can assist you with all your hazardous materials transportation concerns related to clean-up and recovery. We can help you identify hazardous materials and advise you on how to transport them for disposal. We can also advise you on how to safely transport hazardous materials needed to fuel vehicles, run air conditioning systems, supply clinics and hospitals, and treat water supplies in recovery areas. For assistance contact PHMSA's Hazardous Materials Information Center at 1-800-HMR-4922 (1-800-467-4922).

PHMSA can facilitate clean-up and recovery efforts by waiving regulatory requirements where necessary and suggesting alternative transportation methods. If you need to move hazardous materials quickly to or from recovery areas, contact our Office of Exemptions and Approvals at 202-366-4535.

PHMSA can help you to locate the appropriate officials in the Department's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Federal Railroad Administration, Federal Aviation Administration, and U.S. Coast Guard within the Department of Homeland Security, who can provide specific answers to questions related to truck, rail, air, or vessel transportation. For assistance contact PHMSA's Hazardous Materials Information Center at 1-800-HMR-4922 (1-800-467-4922).

For assistance in notifying the appropriate Federal, state, or local agency concerning spilled or leaking hazardous materials discovered in your area, contact the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802.

To obtain written guidance and information on how to safely transport hazardous materials to or from recovery areas, contact PHMSA's Office of Hazardous Materials Training and Initiatives at 202-366-4900.

PHMSA's Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) contains a wealth of information on how to respond to transportation accidents and emergencies involving hazardous materials. The ERG provides first responders - those public safety personnel first dispatched to the scene of a hazardous materials transportation incident, such as fire fighters, police, and emergency services personnel - with a guide for initial actions to be taken in those critical first minutes after an incident to protect the public and to mitigate potential consequences. For a copy, contact PHMSA's Office of Training and Initiatives at 202-366-4900.
