Description:

Objective:

The overall objective of the New York University (NYU) particulate matter (PM) Center's research is to develop and conduct a comprehensive research program focused on the identification and characterization of the physical and chemical properties of particulate matter (PM) that adversely impact human health. The focal hypothesis of this PM Center is that specific chemical species within PM and within certain particle size ranges are primarily responsible for the mortality, morbidity, and functional effects of PM.

Progress Summary:

Some general activities that highlight the NYU PM Center accomplishments are described below. See individual NYU PM Center reports (R827351C001–R827351C012) for specific project details.

Sponsoring and Conducting a Workshop on Source Appointment for Health Effects Studies (May 28-30, 2003, at Arden House in Harriman, NY). The Workshop was co-chaired by Dr. George Thurston of the NYU PM Center and Dr. Helen Suh of the Harvard Center. Participants included PM Center members from Seattle, Rochester, Boston, New York, and the U.S. Environmental Agency (EPA) in North Carolina, as well as other researchers active in the field from Southern California and Utah. Each participant performed a source apportionment using his/her own favored models applied to fine particle composition data from Washington, DC, and Phoenix, AZ, and submitted their analyses in advance. Dr. Kaz Ito of the NYU PM Center applied these analyses to a preagreed upon acute mortality regression model for the Washington, DC data, and Dr. Therese Marr of the University of Washington Center did the same for the Phoenix, AZ data. Generally, there were consistent associations of mortality with fine particles attributable to transportation and coal combustion sources for both cities, as well as for urban road dust in Washington, DC, with some potentially interesting differences. The plenary discussions identified some opportunities for further refinements and collaborations. A Workshop Report is being prepared for publication later this year.

Hosting of Two Visiting Scientists. The NYU PM Center has had the opportunity to host two visiting professors, Dr. Jing-Shiang Hwang and Dr. Dritan Xhillari.

Dr. Jing-Shiang Hwang is completing a 1-year visit in July 2003. He will be returning to his positions as a Research Fellow at the Institute of Statistical Science, Academia Sinica in Taipei, and as an Adjunct Associate Professor at National Taiwan University. His Ph.D. in Statistics was from Harvard (1992). During his tenure at the NYU PM Center, he was instrumental in developing a novel and efficient method for processing and analyzing electrocardiogram data recorded for animals exposed to concentrated ambient air particles (CAPs).

Our other visiting scientist, Dritan Xhillari, arrived in February 2003, from the National Institute for Public Health and Environment (RIVM) in Bilthoven, The Netherlands, with previous experience at the Institute of Public Health in Tirana, in his native Albania, and at the World Health Organization (WHO)-European Center for Environment and Health, located in Bilthoven. He has become actively involved in our subchronic mouse exposures to CAPs, and in our air pollution compositional characterizations using our Center’s mobile laboratory resource in the South Bronx region of New York City.

Manuscript Completion. The NYU PM Center has completed manuscripts describing the accomplishments of the Center members' contributions to the characterization of exposures and health risks resulting from the collapse of the World Trade Center (WTC) buildings on September 11, 2001. The capabilities developed for the NYU PM Center enabled us to rapidly and effectively help the U.S. EPA, New York, and the Nation respond to this emergency situation. The resulting papers are listed in the publications section, and underlined authors are NYU PM Center members.

Promotion of Dr. Polina Maciejczyk. Dr. Maciejczyk came to NYU in 2000 as a PM Center Post-Doctoral trainee following the completion of her Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Maryland. Her exceptional skills and dedication made it possible for us to salvage and make very productive use of the newly developed Jordan Valley XRF analyzer that we purchased with PM Center funds, but which had serious hardware and software deficiencies when it was delivered to us (and to other first batch customers including the U.S. EPA at Research Triangle Park and Seattle). She also made great contributions to our successful creation of a system for exposing mice on a daily basis to CAPs, as well as our air quality measurement successes in Lower Manhattan following the WTC towers’ collapses and in our South Bronx field studies. She currently is becoming heavily involved in our planning for source apportionment work in conjunction with health effects studies in human populations.

Based upon her exceptional performance and desire to establish an independent career in air pollution health effects research, we were able to promote her to faculty status at NYU in April of this year, and we look forward to her further contributions to the success of the NYU PM Center research program.

Future Activities:

We will continue the projects described in this report. A large emphasis of the NYU PM Center will be its efforts to examine the long-term health effects of concentrated ambient PM2.5 through its subchronic studies in mice.
