Environmental monitoring is a critical component of Agency decision making. It is the data gathered when conducting such studies that forms the basis for the decisions that we make. The quality of the decisions are directly related to the quality of the information that we gather. Measurement science, therefore, is the cornerstone of environmental monitoring.
Monitoring plays a critical role in the development and, especially, the implementation of the Agency's regulatory programs. Examples include conducting site specific risk assessments to identify and prioritize contaminated sites and monitoring to determine compliance with permits and other regulatory requirements.
This portal is designed to serve as a link to Agency information on sampling and measurement methodology; monitoring study design; laboratory accreditation; EPA's measurement science research program; Agency measurement science policy directives and initiatives; and as a mechanism for bringing ideas for improving the Agency's methods, procedures, and policies to Agency management.
Forum on Environmental Measurements (FEM). A standing committee of senior EPA managers established to promote consistency and consensus within the Agency on measurement issues.
