Objective:Highlights for the EPA Northwest Research Center Particulate Air Pollution and Health
The highlights and accomplishments of this center were presented at an all day Symposium on January 24, 2005. Approximately 190 people attended the Symposium. Briefly our highlights 1) characterization of exposure and sources, 2) development of a model for estimating source-specific health effects, case-crossover studies of cardiac effects in Seattle, 3) study of associations between bronchiolitis and PM in Southern California, 4) description of associations between cardiac outcomes and chronic exposure in the Women’s Health Initiative cohort, 5) use of exhaled nitric oxide as a model for health outcomes by exploring short term effects and partitioning exposure into ambient-generated versus indoor-generated particles, 6) development of a diesel exposure chamber, 7) development and validation of the apo-E deficient mouse model for use in air pollution studies and 8) new developments in statistical methods. The EPA NW PM Center is responsible for creating an environment that has allowed us to obtain four new outside funding. These grants are:
