Technical Information

The Acoustics Facility technical information on Certification Validation and Differential GPS (DGPS) Validation may be of use to noise certification applicants. Some of the documents are available as HTML web pages or as one or more downloadable word-processor files.

Help for downloading files: With most web browsers, selecting the file format will generate a prompt for downloading or a dialog window with an option for saving the file to the remote computer. Some web browsers may attempt to interpret the word-processor file as a web page. If this occurs, it may be possible to download the file by right-clicking the document link. On most web-browsers, this will generate a floating menu with an option to "save link" or something similar. Selecting this option should generate a downloading prompt or dialog window.

Certification Validation Information

Volpe Acoustics provides support to FAA's Office of Environment and Energy by performing validation of hardware, software, and methodology used by aircraft noise certification applicants for determining certified noise levels.

  • Certification Validation Package
A description of required materials for validation, as well as data forms, and a checklist.
  • Diagram of aircraft tracking geometry (Fig. 1)
Figure 1, which is an attachment to the Validation Package, is a diagram indicating important tracking geometry elements.
  • Preferred File Formats for Validation Data Submittals
Since part of the Validation process involves computer-processing of applicant's data files, this guide provides detailed descriptions of Volpe Acoustics data file formats. Use of these formats by the applicant will help to expedite the validation process. Note that conformance to these formats is not a validation requirement.

Differential GPS Validation Information

Volpe Acoustics provides support to FAA's Office of Environment by performing validation of differential global positioning systems (DGPS) and methodology used by noise certification applicants to determine aircraft position and performance data.

INFORMATION: Use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) Based Time Space Position Information (TSPI) System as a Truth Source for Certification Flight Testing

  • Coordinate Transformation from Geodetic to Measurement Frame
Procedure for transformation of geodetic data to cartesian X,Y,Z.
