SamplePoint is a manual image-analysis program designed to facilitate vegetation cover measurements from nadir digital images of any scale. Operating essentially as a digital point frame, the software loads images, places classification points on the image, and stores classification data to a database as the user classes each point. Up to three simultaneous views of each classification point, at varying zoom levels, are possible. Functional use is not limited to vegetation classification. Installation file contains SamplePoint, SPTracker, a Help Manual, a PowerPoint Tutorial and two sample images.

Minimum PC requirements for basic performance: Windows 2000 with .NET Framework 2.0 installed, 40 MB hard disk space, Microsoft Excel installed, 512 MB RAM.

Before installing SamplePoint, it is highly recommended that the user perform all recommended updates for the Windows operating system at http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us. This will fix almost all software-related difficulties. The user must have write permission to the data directory, which is often not the case for network drives, or CD/DVD. There is no need to uninstall an older version of SamplePoint prior to installing an updated version. No classification data will be lost if updating from an earlier version of SamplePoint, however, databases created with SamplePoint 1.38 or earlier will need a column labeled “Comment” manually added in column C of the database to avoid a non-fatal error message when using the database with versions beyond 1.38.
