Volpe Center Acoustics Facility Staff Biography

Robert W. Samiljan

Robert W. Samiljan

Prior to joining the Acoustics Facility at The Volpe National Transportation Systems Center in August 2004, Mr. Samiljan owned and operated, Chicago-based, Plutone Sound Recording. With over 12 years professional experience in the audio engineering field, he provides skilled technical expertise to support The Volpe Center Acoustics Facility (VCAF) in its extensive acoustical measurement and modeling initiatives.

Mr. Samiljan’s areas of specialty include acoustical instrumentation, source and ambient noise measurement, and aviation noise modeling using the FAA’s Integrated Noise Model (INM). He is an integral member of both the ATMP (Air Tour Management Plan) and Grand Canyon Noise Modeling Teams (FAA/NPS).

Supporting ATMP, Mr. Samiljan has served as technical lead on ambient noise measurements at Petrified National Forest, Canyon de Chelly, Navajo National Monument, Acadia National Park and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

In addition, Mr. Samiljan oversees the Volpe Acoustics Lab, where his primary responsibilities include design and configuration of measurement systems; diagnostics, repair and maintenance of acoustical instrumentation; preparation of technical documentation; training of field staff; inventory management; and systems modernization.
