UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending May 4, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 411,000, a decrease of 11,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 422,000. The 4-week moving average was 428,000, a decrease of 8,500 from the previous week's revised average of 436,500. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.0 percent for the week ending April 27, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.9 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment
during the week ending April 27 was 3,803,000, an increase
of 61,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,742,000. The 4-week
moving average was 3,756,500, an increase of 13,250 from the preceding
week's revised average of 3,743,250. UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 358,390 in the week ending May 4, a decrease of 9,503 from the previous week. There were 336,319 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent during the week ending April 27, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,696,098, an increase of 25,432 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,670,426. Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending April 20. 46 states reported that 1,431,057 individuals filed under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending April 20. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,188 in the week ending April 27, an increase of 51 from the prior week. There were 926 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 103 from the preceding week. There were 14,671 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending April 20, an increase of 251 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,381, a decrease of 458 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 20 were in Alaska (6.0 percent), Puerto Rico (5.5), Oregon (4.6), Washington (4.6), South Carolina (4.2), California (3.7), Idaho (3.7), Massachusetts (3.7), Pennsylvania (3.7), and Wisconsin (3.7). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 27 were in New York (+1,277), Texas (+1,092), Florida (+1,081), Tennessee (+1,017), and Puerto Rico (+693), while the largest decreases were in Massachusetts (-6,654), California (-4,136), Georgia (-1,783), Louisiana (-1,318), and Oregon (-1,151).
