Pu`u `O`o - Kupaianaha Eruption of Kilauea Volcano1992-1994: Eruption returns to Pu`u `O`o: flank vents build shield against uprift side of cone |
|
1992 February |
Aerial (top) and ground (bottom) views of fissure vent and flows on the southwest flank of Pu`u `O`o cone. This was the first lava flow from Pu`u `O`o since the Kupaianaha vent began erupting in July 1986. This vent was active from February 17 to March 3, 1992.
1992 March |
Lava that poured from vents of episode 50 and 51 built a shield against the southwest flank of Pu`u `O`o. The shield continued to grow during subsequent episodes.
1992 April |
String of spatter cones on the southwest flank of Pu`u `O`o (lower left) formed early in episode 51, which began on March 7, 1992.
1992 April |
Lava pond inside Pu`u `O`o crater, the surface of which fluctuated between 35 and 60 m below the lowest point on the crater rim in March and April.
1992 September |
Lava tubes developed as flows spread from flank vents of Pu`u `O`o; HVO volcanologists conduct geophysical surveys above lava tubes to calculate lava discharge.
1992 October |
Aerial (top) and ground (bottom) views of new fissure on the south flank of Pu`u `O`o cone at the beginning of episode 52. Though quiet when episode 52 began, the episode 51 vents started erupting again on October 3.
1992 November |
Pahoehoe flows move across a black sand beach at Kamoamoa and ooze into the sea. By the end of November 1992, flows covered most of the archeological sites, campground, and picnic area.
1993 February |
Aerial (top) and ground (bottom) views of a lava fountain and flows on the south flank of Pu`u `O`o cone. This new vent marked the beginning of episode 53. The vent opened about 10 m southwest of episode 52 vents.
1993 March |
Lava pond inside Pu`u `O`o was active during the flank eruptions.
1993 March |
Lava erupted from episode 53 formed a lava delta at Kamoamoa. Part of the Chain of Craters road is visible on both sides of the new flow.
1993 May |
White steam plume at coastline marks an active ocean entry of the Kamoamoa flow field. Note Pu`u `O`o on skyline, about 11 km from the ocean.
1994 March |
Several days of spectacular explosions at the Kamoamoa entry produced bursting lava bubbles as large as 10 m in diameter and built two littoral cones on the active lava bench. |
