I am voicing my support for audible signals and tactile
markings at crosswalks and urge the Access Board to include requirements for
such accommodations to assist those of us who are blind, in future regulations.
As someone who lost vision as an adult, I am regularly challenged in attempting
to determine the location of crosswalk signal buttons, to determine when a walk
signal is activated, and, with increasing numbers of ramps level with the
sidewalks and street to determine where the side walks and streets meet.
While I realize that some agencies are confused by the apparent disagreements
between the two National organizations representing the blind, I think that it
is more important to realize that the vast majority of those with vision loss
belong to neither of these organizations. I urge the Access Board to use common
sense in its decision to help all of us with vision loss to travel more safely
and independently.
Thank you for considering this appeal.
Sincerely,
Sharon Latka Davis
