A Brief Orientation

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) operates and maintains the Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS). MCMIS contains information on the safety fitness of commercial motor carriers and hazardous material (HM) shippers subject to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and the Hazardous Materials Regulations. This information is available to the general public through the MCMIS Data Dissemination Program.

This catalog describes the Data Dissemination Program. It identifies certain motor carrier data available to the public, and explains how to obtain these data. Responsibility for disseminating these data, and the authority to charge prescribed fees for the data, have been delegated to a government contractor,

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Over-the-phone technical support is available to users of the MCMIS Data Dissemination Program. This technical assistance may be requested to guide you in loading data from a diskette, or another automated format supplied by CoTs, into your computer system. Assistance is also available to help you read and interpret MCMIS data.

To initiate over-the-phone support, dial 703-280-4001 and ask for MCMIS Technical Assistance. Charges will be billed to you, following the phone conversation, at a rate of $60.00 per hour. These charges will be prorated according to the time actually spent helping solve your problem and answering your questions.

To avoid the charge for technical support, it is suggested that you request data in a media format with which you, or someone in your organization, is familiar. Use of these files requires rudimentary technical knowledge of Disk Operating System (DOS) and often access to, and the ability to use, database software. Requesters with limited computer resources and expertise are, therefore, encouraged to order MCMIS data in hardcopy (printed) formats.
