Table 6.1 - Final Guidelines: Fishing Piers and Platforms

15.3.1 General

Section:  Application    
Requirement:  Newly designed and constructed and altered fishing piers and platforms must comply with 15.3.

15.3.2 Accessible Route

Section:  General
Requirement:  Gangways that are part of accessible routes must comply with accessible route requirements.

Section:  Exceptions - Alterations, Maximum Rise, Landings, Handrail Extensions, Cross Slope, LULAs and Platform Li
Requirement:  Accessible routes serving floating fishing piers and platforms  permitted to use exceptions in 15.2.2 for alterations,
maximum rise, landings, handrail extensions, cross slope, LULAs and platform lifts.

Section:  Exception -  Maximum Slope    
Requirement:  Maximum 1:12 slope does not apply where total length of gangways serving as part of accessible route is at least 30
feet.

15.3.3 Railings

Section:  General
Requirement:  Where railings provided, they must comply with 15.3.3.

Section:  Edge Protection
Requirement:  Edge protection must be provided and extend 2 inches minimum above ground or deck surface.

Section:  Exception - Deck Extension Beyond Railing
Requirement:  Where railing is 34 inches or less above ground or deck surface, edge protection is not required if deck surface
extends 12 inches minimum beyond inside face of railing.  Toe clearance must be 9 inches minimum above ground
or deck surface beyond railing.  Toe clearance must be 30 inches minimum wide.

Section:  Height
Requirement:  At least 25% of railings must be 34 inches maximum above ground or deck surface.

Section:  Exception - Guards Complying with IBC
Requirement:  Maximum height requirement does not apply to portion of fishing pier or platform where guard complying with
sections 1003.2.12.1 (Height) and 1003.2.12.2 (Openings) of  International Building Code (IBC) provided.

Section:  Dispersion
Requirement:  Railings complying with maximum height requirement must be dispersed throughout fishing pier or platform.

15.3.4 Clear Floor or Ground Space

Section:  General
Requirement:  Where railing complying with maximum height requirement is located, at least one clear floor or ground space
complying with 4.2.4.1 must be provided.  Where no railings are provided, at least one clear floor or ground space
complying with 4.2.4.1 must be provided.


15.3.5 Maneuvering Space

Section:  General
Requirement:  At least one maneuvering space complying with 4.2.3 must be provided on fishing pier or platform.
