Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards (UFAS)
The Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards (UFAS) provide design requirements for the construction or alteration of facilities covered by the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) which requires access to Federally funded facilities. Published in 1984, these standards are maintained by four designated agencies (the General Services Administration, the U.S. Postal Service, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development) and are based on guidelines developed by the Access Board. [88 pages] Note: In 2004, the Board updated and overhauled its ABA guidelines jointly with guidelines for facilities covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); see the ADA and ABA Accessibility Guidelines. These guidelines will serve as the basis for new standards under the ABA that will replace UFAS.
