View of collapse pits on west flank of Pu`u `O`o, Kilauea Volcano, Hawai`i
Photograph by C. Heliker on January 5, 1995
Fume billows from two prominent collapse pits on the west flank of Pu`u `O`o. The upper pit, the "Great Pit," eventually engulfed the entire slope of the cone; the lower pit overlies the episode 51 vents. The pit at the bottom of the photograph is the inactive lava pond into which lava poured from the episode 51 and 52 vents.
