U.S. Department of Labor cancels industry committee for American SamoaAmendments to federal Fair Labor Standards Act set wagesWASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of Labor today announced the cancellation of Industry Committee No. 27, which was convened on May 10 and scheduled to meet later this month. The committee was discharged following the enactment of the U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans’ Care, Katrina Recovery and Iraq Accountability Appropriations Act of 2007, which amends the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and removes the Labor Department’s authority to convene American Samoa Industry Committees. The act, signed into law on May 25, sets the current minimum wage for American Samoa industries at the rate in effect for each industry classification at the time of enactment and lays out a timetable for increasing the minimum wages beginning on the 60th day after the date of enactment. Beginning on July 24, the applicable wage rate in effect for key industries will be as follows:
