USADF Hosts Former President Of Benin:

WASHINGTON - October 23, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. – October 23, 2008 – The United States African Development Foundation hosted a distinguished lecture series speech this afternoon with the Former President of Benin, Nicephore Dieudonne Soglo, at its headquarters in Washington, D.C. Mr. Soglo served Benin as Prime Minister from 1990-1991 and as President from 1991 – 1996. He is currently the Mayor of Cotonou and is the Vice Chairman of the Africa Forum which is comprised of former African Heads of State.

USADF Staff with President SogloDuring the talk, Former President Soglo focused on the history of Benin and the future of Africa. In Speaking about Africa, Mr. Soglo stated, “I am optimistic of what is going to happen on our continent.”

In explaining the importance of such talks, USADF Lloyd Pierson stated, “It is an honor and privilege that USADF can host former President Soglo. I hope USADF and other African leaders can continue this type of dialogue as we work together to help the poor and marginalized in Africa.”

USADF started programming in Benin in 1986 to provide financial and technical support to rural cooperatives and small urban businesses that produce and process food and other consumables for the domestic and export markets. Grassroots work in Benin has made way for sustained local economical and social development. USADF’s Benin portfolio consists of six projects worth $1.17 million.

The United States African Development Foundation (USADF) is a United States Government agency dedicated to expanding access to economic opportunity in Africa. Currently USADF operates in 20 African nations. Over the past 25 years, USADF has directly funded nearly 1,100 African projects representing in excess of $150 million in support of African enterprises and local African communities.
