Guide to the
1997 Economic Census

The Advance report provides a preliminary look at data for the whole economy at the beginning of the publication program.

• It includes data at the national level only.
• It shows only sectors and subsectors, not detailed industries.
• The data are preliminary and will be superseded as more detailed geographic area and industry reports are published.
• The report includes the first data ever published according to NAICS, and among the last data to be published by SIC.

While the NAICS table is limited to 1997 data, the SIC table shows figures for both 1992 and 1997, making possible the calculation of percent change in sales or employment over the 5-year period. The SIC-based data in the Advance report will be superseded with the publication of Comparative Statistics.
