Birding with a purpose  

Chandler Robbins was Keynote speaker at Massachusetts Audubon Society's 12th Birders Meeting March 6th, where his topic was "Birding with a Purpose."  This meeting featured the debut of the long-awaited Massachusetts Breeding Bird Atlas, the field work for which had been conducted in the 1970s.

Encouraging Young Scientists    

On April 14, USGS Scientist Dr. J. Michael Meyers will participate as a Tier II judge of the 56th Georgia State Science and Engineering Fair at the University of Georgia .   Dr. Meyers has judged botany, zoology, and environmental science and forestry projects at this event for the last seven years.   It's important to encourage young scientists in any way we can.  Reviewing and discussing the projects with students is enlightening and fun.  Awards presented at the Georgia state level amount to more than $60,000 in university scholarships and grants for trips to national and international science fairs.

USGS Cooperation with SE Partners in Flight   

USGS scientist, Dr. J. Michael Meyers presented a poster on the status of the Painted Bunting, recent cooperative research with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, at the annual meeting of the SE Partners in Flight, 4 March 2004 , Jekyll Island , GA.   Dr. Meyers was also present at an invited seminar on cooperative research on the Painted Bunting, 1996-2003 during the research session on 5 March 2004 .  The Painted Bunting is a species of special concern with a population trend that has been declining by 3% per year since 1966.  Recently scientists and managers from many agencies in NC, SC, GA, and FL meet and conducted a workshop on the species and also formed the Eastern Painted Bunting Working Group.
