Profile America — Thursday, October 23rd. They seem almost as universal as cell phones and can be identified by the white cords and small earphones, and often by the rhythmic movement of the wearer. It’s the iPod, of course, unveiled by Apple on this day seven years ago, and the best selling digital audio player in history. The original iPod officially went on sale November 10th of 2001 and cost $399. Now in its sixth generation, with many variations, more than 140 million iPods have been sold. While iPods and downloading from the Internet are a growing way to listen to music, CDs still account for more than $9 billion of record sales annually. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau online at <www.census.gov>.
