Profile America — Sunday, October 12th. As National Hispanic Heritage Month draws to a close, political analysts are noting the potentially important role that voters from this community will have on next month’s presidential election. Both candidates have been paying considerable attention to areas of the country with large Hispanic populations, such as California, Texas and Florida. In the 2004 election, 7.6 million Hispanic citizens voted — about 47 percent of those eligible to cast ballots. This is about the same percentage that voted in the presidential election of 2000. In the congressional elections two years ago, about 32 percent of Hispanic citizens voted. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau online at <www.census.gov>.
